Hi, I’m Nathan Bell, COO of telkomtelstra, and I’m here today to talk to you about Cloud in Indonesia.
So when we talk about Cloud, there’s a number of different aspects and the reason why those aspects are important is because different parts of a Cloud environment are going to mean different things to different people.
So if we look at the very base infrastructure of Cloud and we talk about infrastructure-as-a-service, this is what IT people tend to get excited about. How do I virtualize my underlying infrastructure to make sure that I have more flexibility and more scalability. So it’s basically being able to turn up or turn down IT infrastructure as I need to, whether that’s in the form of server, storage or even compute.
The next layer we move into is the platform-as-a-service. Now this is the area where developers get very excited. This becomes their playground. Platform-as-a-service has a role to provide us a safety net I guess you can say in terms of creating lots of new capability, without worrying about how those underlying elements are going to behave, and focus on creating the value you want to create for your business.
Software-as-a-service is that next part of the stage. This is where the business user tends to get excited.
So software-as-a-service is tools that a business can actually start to use without worrying what is that ongoing cost going to be, depending on their business performance? How exciting would it be if you could actually start using services in a Cloud environment knowing that you could turn them up even further, or even start to turn them down depending on the performance of your business?
Well, obviously that would mean you would be able to take more risks. You would be able to start testing out new business models to be able to see how you are going to maximise the benefit that your business can actually bring the marketplace.
So those are the different types of Cloud stages we have:
- and Software-as-a-service
But what it all really comes down to is, what is the actual benefit of Cloud going to be to you business? And there’s a few key benefits that we see as telkomtelstra:
The first one, has to be security. Cloud is a secure environment that is going to add value to your organization in terms of knowing what parts of your Cloud infrastructure are being used by what part of your organization, for what service. Whether that’s as a software, application development or the IT infrastructure.
The second is in terms of the scalability. We all know that our businesses are growing at a very dynamic rate and we need to be able to respond to that. So Cloud gives us that flexibility we’ve never had before, to be able to respond to market changes and developments in a much more rapid fashion.
And lastly, to be more bold in the decisions we are going to make. How exciting would it be to sit in a meeting and make the decision of, ‘Yes! I think we can do that!’ As opposed to, ‘I’ll get back to you in a couple of days and we can make an assessment.’?
That’s the value of Cloud: that we can be bolder in the decisions we make. We can look at new markets that we want to serve, knowing that if it doesn’t work out the way that we wanted it to, we can always roll back to the environment that we were trying to manage before.
That’s the scalability of Cloud, that’s the security of Cloud and most importantly, driving those new growth opportunities.
So, here at telkomtelstra, we see that Cloud has a great role to play in the Indonesian marketplace in helping businesses reach their full potential in terms of what they can actually go and achieve.
Thank you very much.
